CITY OF SASKATOON AND SASKPOWER ANNOUNCE BRIGHT PARTNERSHIP
The City of Saskatoon and SaskPower are partnering to make Saskatoon a more
energy-efficient community by giving away 8,000 compact fluorescent lights
(CFLs).
“We are pleased to announce our partnership with SaskPower and our
shared commitment to making Saskatoon a more environmentally-friendly place
to live,” said Mayor Donald Atchison. “Switching to energy-efficient
lighting is an easy way for everyone to save on their electrical bill, and
help Saskatoon meet its greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.”
“We want everyone in Saskatoon to know that installing ENERGY STAR®
CFLs in every light fixture is one of the smartest investments they can make,”
Minister responsible for SaskPower John Nilson said.
“If Saskatoon residents use all 8,000 CFLs being given away in this
promotion to replace standard 60-watt bulbs in their homes, our city could
save enough electricity to power over 100 homes for an entire year and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions by more than 800 tonnes,” says Sheri Praski,
manager, City of Saskatoon Environmental Services.
CFLs use at least 66 per cent less electricity than standard light bulbs
and last up to 10 times longer. As well as being better for the environment,
CFLs are money savers. Each 15-watt CFL can save up to $35 in electricity
costs over its lifetime.
On Saturday, March 24, the City of Saskatoon and SaskPower will give away
5,000 CFLs at the Saskatoon Home Depot (707 Circle Drive) between 9 a.m. and
2 p.m. The 15-watt compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs will be distributed
in two-packs to the first 2,500 customers who arrive. The remaining 3,000
CFLs in this program will be distributed through other joint promotions over
the coming months.
This partnership is part of the City of Saskatoon’s efforts to reduce
overall emissions as a city, and is also part of SaskPower’s ongoing
efforts to help customers find ways to manage their electricity costs and
reduce their impact on the environment.
